José Bonifácio's Family History


José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (The Patriarch of Brazilian Independence) was born on June 13, 1763 in Santos, Province of Säo Paulo, Brazil. He died in Niterói, capital of the Province of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on April 6, 1838 at 3:00 PM. He was seventy five years old.

His father Bonifácio José de Andrada was born in Santos, Brazil on May 14, 1726 and he died in 1789 when he was sixty three years old. His mother Maria Barbara da Silva also was born in Santos in 1738 and she died on August 28, 1821 when she was eighty three years old.

His mother Maria Barbara was of Brazilian origin for many generations, but his father's parents were Portuguese. Both were born in Braga, Portugal.

His father's family had many noble ancestors in Portugal and in Spain. José Bonifácio's grandfather on his father's side of the family was born in Braga, Portugal in 1678 and his name was José Ribeiro de Andrada. His grandfather died in Santos, Brazil.His grandmother was born also in Braga, Portugal, her name was Ana da Silva Borges and she was a descendent of one of the most distinguished and influential families from Spain.

According to Afrânio Peixoto in his study of José Bonifácio's genealogical family tree, he found out that José Bonifácio's great-grandfather was a brother of Dom Joäo IV (O Restaurador), translation; (The Liberator or The Restorer.) Dom Joäo IV was the King of Portugal from 1640 to 1656 and he was credited with restoring the liberty of the Portuguese people from Spanish rule.

Three of José Bonifácio's uncles (his father's brothers) living in Santos were Catholic priests and they had doctoral degrees in theology. One of the priests was also a medical doctor.

The parents of José Bonifácio had ten children of which José Bonifácio was the second eldest. His older brother Patricio Manoel Bueno de Andrada was also a Catholic priest.

The parents of José Bonifácio had ten children. The names of the ten children and year of their birthday is as follows:

1) Patricio Manoel Bueno de Andrada - (March 24, 1760)

7) Antônio Carlos Ribeiro de Andrada Machado e Silva – 
   (Novomber 1, 1773)

8) Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada - (June 19, 1775)

9) Ursula de Andrada (some biographers of José Bonifácio do not list this sister because she died as a baby)

10) Francisco Eugênio de Andrada - (August 11, 1778)


José Bonifácio's wife and children


José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva married Narcisa Emília O'Leary
a native of Ireland, in Lisbon, Portugal on January 31, 1790.

Narcisa Emília O'Leary was born in 1770, in Ireland. She died onboard of the ship on July 21, 1829 when she was fifty nine years old, the day before José Bonifácio arrived in Brazil from the exile on July 23, 1829.

José Bonifácio had two children with his wife Narcisa Emília; the oldest daughter called Carlota Emília Ribeiro de Andrada and her sister called Gabriela Frederica Ribeiro de Andrada; she born on 1803. (Gabriela Frederica married her uncle Martim Francisco, a brother of José Bonifácio in 1820)

José Bonifácio also had two other daughters who were the result of extramarital love affairs. The first daughter named "Elisa" was born in 1793, in Paris, as the result of José Bonifácio's love affair with Madame Delaunay.

The second daughter named "Narcisa Candida" was born in 1819, in Portugal, as the result of José Bonifácio's love affair with an unknown woman. There is no information regarding the mother, or the reason that she let José Bonifácio and his wife take the small baby to Brazil in 1819. (José Bonifácio adored this young daughter, and he gave her all his attention, tutoring her in her studies after his wife died in 1829. This daughter was the one who took care of José Bonifácio in the last years of his life.)


Martim Francisco's wife and children


Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada married his niece, a daughter of José Bonifácio named Gabriela Frederica Ribeiro de Andrada in Santos, Brazil on November 15, 1820.

Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada had five children with his wife Gabriela Frederica Ribeiro de Andrada as follows:

1) Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada (The Second)
       He was born on June 10, 1825, in France during exile.
       He was named in honor of his father.

2) José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (The Younger)
      He was born on November 8, 1827, in France during exile.
   He was named José Bonifácio in honor of his famous grandfather.

3) Antônio Carlos Ribeiro de Andrada
      He was born on March 3, 1836, in Santos, Brazil after his      father had returned from exile. He was named in honor of his uncle.

4) Maria Flora Ribeiro de Andrada
      She was named in honor of her aunt, her father's sister.
      She never married and had no children.

5) Narcisa Emília Ribeiro de Andrada
   She was named in honor of her grandmother, José Bonifácio's wife.
   She also never married and had no children.

Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada's 2nd son;
José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (The Younger) married Adelaide
Eugênia Aguiar de Andrada on August 3, 1854.

Adelaide Eugênia Aguiar de Andrada was a granddaughter of Barbara
Joaquina de Andrada a sister of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva
(The Patriarch of Independence.)

José Bonifácio (The Younger) and his wife Adelaide Eugênia had
seven children as follows:

1) Narcisa Emília de Andrada e Silva (born on August 18, 1855)
       She married but never had any children.

2) José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (The Third)
       (born on January 2, 1858)
        He died when he was 15 years old.

3) Martim Francisco de Andrada e Silva
      (born on November 28, 1859)

4) Maria Flora de Andrada e Silva
       (born on June 3, 1862)

3) Gabriela Frederica de Andrada e Silva
       (born on April 27, 1867)

6) Barbara de Andrada e Silva
       (born on May 1869 and died 13 months later on June 30, 1870)

7) Bento de Andrada e Silva
He and his mother died when she was giving birth to him at 6:30 AM on May 15, 1871. When she died Adelaide Eugênia was only thirty-eight years old.


The biography of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (The Younger)
by Júlio Cezar de Faria, published by Companhia Editora Nacional
in 1944, mentioned that José Bonifácio's (The Younger) 3rd son Martim Francisco was married to Benvinda Bueno de Andrada and his sister Gabriela Frederica was married on January 25, 1889 to Dr. Carlos Coelho. The biography does not mention if Martim Francisco and Gabriela Frederica had any children.

The biography of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (The Younger)
does mention that his fourth daughter Maria Flora de Andrada e Silva married in 1878 Carlos de Souza Queiroz, and also mentions the name of the couple's daughters.

Maria Flora's husband Carlos de Souza Queiroz also had a very prestigious Portuguese/Brazilian ancestry. His father the
"Baron of Souza Queiroz" was one of the wealthiest man in Brazil.

Queiroz had four daughters as follows:

1) Adelaide Eugenia Andrada de Souza Queiroz
      She never married and never had children.

2) Valentina Andrada de Souza Queiroz
      She was married and had various children.

3) Lucilia Andrada de Souza Queiroz
       She never married and never had children.

4) Sylvia Andrada de Souza Queiroz
       (born on February 20, 1894 and died on November 1988)
        She married and had four children."


Maria Flora's fourth daughter; Sylvia Andrada de Souza Queiroz married Genaro Pilar do Amaral and they had four children as follows:

1) Edgar Pilar do Amaral - (Deceased)
   He was married to Bibisa Almeida Prado and they had one son:

   Carlos Almeida Prado do Amaral

2) Roberto Pilar do Amaral - (Deceased)
   He married and had no children.

3) Jose Carlos Pilar do Amaral - (Deceased)
       (born on June 15, 1926 and died on January 26, 1996)

4) Vera Pilar do Amaral - (Deceased)
   She married Flavio Rodrigues de Morais, and had 2 children:
   Carmelita and Vera Sylvia.


Sylvia Andrada de Souza Queiroz's third son;
José Carlos Pilar do Amaral married Vera Lia C. Amaral
and they had three children as follows:

1) Ricardo C. Amaral

2) Vera Helena / Maria Lucia C. Amaral (twins)
       Maria Lucia married Edward Pickhardt, and they had 2 children:
       Christopher and Christina Pickhardt.
